Accounting segregation records each party’s entitlements in the books. Bank custody arrangements, on the other hand, concern the accounts, the custodians, and the rules that govern them. A brokerage model may also involve transferring amounts to other parties in order to execute transactions. So it’s worth understanding what actually happens to your money after you deposit it, rather than settling for a general statement on a marketing page.
Even with sound segregation arrangements in place, a trade is never guaranteed. A loss caused by price movement or leverage is a very different matter from a problem with the safekeeping of client funds or the firm’s insolvency. Each situation carries its own rights and procedures depending on the agreement and the applicable legal framework — it can’t be summed up in a single word like “safe.”
Ask for the current policy in writing, and identify where it explains how default is handled, who the custodians are, and what exceptions apply. If the fund-protection page differs from the client agreement, ask for the discrepancy to be resolved before you decide. Clarity about the limits of protection is worth far more than a sweeping promise whose conditions are hard to pin down.
Does segregation of funds prevent trading losses? No. Safekeeping arrangements and market risk are two separate issues — leveraged trading can still result in the loss of your capital.
