A Large Move Needs a Reference.

A two percent move may be striking in a quiet market and ordinary in a turbulent one. The percentage alone cannot tell us how unusual the move was. We need a reference for the movement normally observed around it.

The book uses returns scaled by volatility estimated from earlier information. This puts movement in context and makes comparisons less dependent on the absolute price of an instrument. A large movement relative to its recent scale deserves a different description from the same movement inside much wider noise.

Scaling does not provide direction by itself, and volatility estimates can lag a changing market. Its practical value is a more disciplined comparison. Actual execution levels and monetary exposure still require the original price units.

لكن هذا القياس لا يتنبأ بالاتجاه وحده، كما أن تقدير التقلب قد يتأخر عن تغير السوق. فائدته الأساسية تنظيم المقارنة، مع الاحتفاظ بالسعر الخام عند حساب مستويات التنفيذ والخسارة.
